Arnold F. Bach was the captain of the Dixieland, the flagship of the United Earth Government's Space Force's 4th Patrol Division.

During the 2527 Military Expenditure Hearings Bach became a symbol of the decadence of the space force due to the many privileges he enjoyed:

  • Bach's personal living space measured 240 square metres.
  • The rest of the crew, 90 total, were forced to share a living space of the same size: an average of 2.6 square metres per person.
  • Bach had a personal staff including 1 secretary, 6 aides, 2 personal cooks and a personal nurse. (And all of their salaries were, of course, paid by the taxpayers).(LOGH: 'To Earth')
