Synopsis

Oskar von Reuenthal returns to his office in Heinessen and assigns Julius Elsheimer to handle all domestic political matters. Job Trunicht is killed by Reuenthal after they both discuss their ambitions and Reinhard von Lohengramm. Reuenthal is visited by Elfriede von Kohlrausch and her baby. Reuenthal requests that she entrusts their son to Wolfgang Mittermeyer. On 16 December 800 UC (2 NIC / 491 IC / 3600 CE), Reuenthal dies at the age of 33. Mittermeyer arrives on Heinessen, but is too late to meet with his old friend. Hans Eduard Bergengrün, who had previously served under Siegfried Kircheis before serving Reuenthal, commits suicide after hearing of Reuenthal's death. Bergengrün had lost both his commanders to underhanded political schemes. Heydrich Lang confesses to all his actions and implicates Adrian Rubinsky. Rubinsky is however nowhere to be found.

Appendices

"I don't give a damn if you belittle republican democracy, profit at the expense of the state, or deceive the people. But…! But I won't allow you to soil the Kaiser's dignity with your filthy, faeces-filled tongue. I neither served nor rebelled against a Kaiser who could be insulted by someone like you!"

Oskar von Reuenthal, to Job Trunicht, after shooting him

Background information

  • Reuenthal's request to Kohlrausch on entrusting their son to Mittermeyer is a reference to Ji Kang, one of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, entrusting his children to his friend and fellow sage Shan Tao before he was executed as a result of being caught in a political intrigue. This act, together with Shan Tao honouring Ji Kang's wishes, became immortalised in the Chinese idiom 嵇绍不孤.
